Biography

Dawne Shand is a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 1st Essex District. She is affiliated with the Democratic Party and assumed office on January 4, 2023. Her current term is set to end on January 1, 2025.

Shand earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and French from the University of Alabama in 1992 and a master’s degree in creative nonfiction from Emerson College in 2005. Prior to her election to the Massachusetts state legislature, Shand served as the president of the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus. She also managed former state representative Jamie Zahlaway Belsito’s campaign for congress in 2020.

In the 2022 election, Shand defeated Charles Fitzwater, receiving 12,790 votes (59.6%) to Fitzwater’s 8,657 (40.3%). In addition to her political involvement, Shand has worked as a writer and a management consultant. She lives in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
