ZELL MILLER grew up in the Georgia village of Young Harris and graduated from Young Harris College. A Marine Corps veteran, Miller holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Georgia and a bachelor’s degree in political science. He taught political science and history at several Georgia colleges and universities. In 1958 he was elected mayor of Young Harris. Two years later he was elected to the Georgia State Senate. In 1972, he was named executive director of the Democratic Party of Georgia by then-Governor Jimmy Carter. In 1974 he was elected lieutenant governor, a post he held for 16 years. In 1985 he chaired the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors. He was elected governor in 1989 and reelected in 1997. On July 24, 2000, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate by Gov. Roy Barnes to replace the late Senator Paul Coverdell.
