Biography

VL Coffin was born in Biddeford, Maine. As a child, his family moved to New Jersey where he was raised by his mother along with his brother and three sisters. He spent two years studying at Divine Word Seminary. In 1990, he joined the Army to serve this country. While stationed in Germany, with the support of his chain of command, he helped to start a program to support a kinderheim (children’s home) in nearby Regensburg—performing magic at parties, taking them on ski trips, celebrating Christmas with them, and much more. After leaving active duty, he moved to Vermont to raise his own family, first settling in Bellows Falls. On October 10, 2001, he reentered service with the Vermont Army national guard eventually deploying to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He retired from the guard in February 2017 and worked for a time as a truck driver and later in a mine in Vermont as a maintainer until the day before he was sworn into office.
