TILGHMAN M. TUCKER, the thirteenth governor of Mississippi, was born near Lime Stone Springs, North Carolina on February 5, 1802. His early education was attained in the common schools of his native state. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and then established his legal career in Columbus, Mississippi. Tucker first entered politics as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, a position he held from 1831 to 1835. He also served as a member of the Mississippi State Senate from 1838 to 1841. Tucker next secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and was elected governor by a popular vote on November 1, 1841. During his tenure, the controversial Union Bank bond issue was dealt with, as well as an embezzlement scandal in the state treasurers’ office. After completing his term, Tucker left office on January 10, 1844. He continued to stay politically active, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, a position he held until 1845. Governor Tilghman M. Tucker passed away on April 3, 1859 and was buried at his Cottonwood plantation in Louisiana.
