Suraj Budathoki is a dedicated public servant and a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, representing Hillsborough District 40. His journey to this position is a testament to his resilience, determination, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Born in Samrang, Bhutan, Suraj Budathoki’s early life was marked by hardship and displacement. As a member of the Nepali-speaking Bhutanese community, he and his family faced political persecution and were forced to leave their homeland. This led to years of living in a refugee camp in Nepal, where he spent 17 years enduring challenging conditions. Despite these adversities, he remained hopeful and determined to build a better future.

In 2009, Suraj Budathoki’s life took a transformative turn when he resettled in the United States through the Bhutanese refugee resettlement program. He embraced the opportunities that came with his new life in America, working tirelessly to rebuild his life from scratch. He pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University in 2015 and a graduate degree from Norwich University in 2018. Currently, he is a Ph.D. candidate at Saybrook University in California, furthering his academic and professional aspirations.

Suraj Budathoki’s career has been marked by his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to community service. As a business executive, he has contributed to the local economy and created opportunities for others. He is also the founder of Peace Initiative Bhutan, an organization that reflects his commitment to promoting peace and understanding.

In addition to his professional achievements, Suraj Budathoki has been actively involved in local government and community initiatives. He served as a Conduct Board Member, appointed by the Manchester Mayor, demonstrating his dedication to upholding ethical standards and fostering accountability.

As a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Suraj Budathoki brings a unique perspective shaped by his experiences as a refugee and immigrant. He is passionate about advocating for policies that promote inclusivity, social justice, and economic opportunity. Suraj Budathoki resides in Manchester, New Hampshire, with his wife, Ganga, and their two children, Brianna and Bastian. Together, they have built a life rooted in hard work, family values, and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world around them.
