Biography

Stephen A. West, born on April 28, 1970, in Paris, Kentucky, is an American attorney and politician serving as a member of the Kentucky Senate from the 27th district. He assumed office on March 23, 2015.

West attended Grant County High School and later pursued higher education at Eastern Kentucky University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications in 1993. He furthered his education by obtaining a Juris Doctor from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University in 1996.

Outside of politics, West has had a diverse career. He has worked as a cattle farmer, attorney, and real estate agent. His real estate career includes working with Kirkpatrick and Company. He has also been a member of the Lexington-Bluegrass Association of Realtors.

West’s political career began when he was elected to the Kentucky Senate in a special election held on March 3, 2015. He assumed office later that month on March 23, 2015. During the 2015 and 2017 legislative sessions, West served as vice chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee. In the 2019–2020 legislative session, he served as vice chair of the Senate Education Committee. Since 2019, he has served as vice chair of the Senate Education Committee. West also serves as co-chair of the Senate Administrative Regulation Review Subcommittee.

West is a member of the Republican Party. His current term ends on January 1, 2025, and he is running for re-election to the Kentucky State Senate to represent District 27.
