SAMUEL STEVENS, JR. was born in Talbot County, Maryland on July 13, 1778. His education was attained at Reverend John Bowie’s School. During the War of 1812, he served as captain of the 9 th Regiment of the Maryland Militia. Stevens entered politics, serving as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, a position he held from 1807 to 1813, in 1817, and from 1819 to 1820. Stevens became governor of Maryland on December 16, 1822. He was reelected to a second term in 1823, and to a third term in 1824. During his tenure, legislation was passed that granted Jews the right to vote; the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company was chartered; and construction on the national road was finished. After leaving office, Stevens retired from public service. He stayed active, serving as president of the Agricultural Society for the Eastern Shore. Governor Samuel Stevens, Jr. passed away on February 7, 1860.
