Biography

Ronnie Calvo is an independent member of the Northern Mariana Islands Senate, representing the Rota district. Calvo, whose full name is Ronnie Mendiola Calvo, won the seat in the November 2024 general election, unseating longtime incumbent senator Paul A. Manglona by 676 votes to 618. Calvo was sworn in with the new Senate in January 2025 for a four-year term that runs to January 2029. Rota makes up the First Senatorial District, which elects three senators on staggered terms.1

Before winning election to the Senate, Calvo worked on Rota as a special education teacher.

When the Senate organized under Senate President Dennis James Mendiola, a fellow Rota senator, Calvo was given the chairmanship of the Committee on Education and Youth Affairs. Calvo is also vice chair of two committees, Federal Relations and Military Affairs, and Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications. In addition, Calvo holds seats on the committees on Health, Welfare and Programs; Rules and Procedures; Executive Appointments and Government Investigations; Fiscal Affairs; Gaming; Judiciary, Government and Law; and Resources, Economic Development and Workforce.
