Biography

James Mikell “Mike” Burns (born June 9, 1952) is an American politician. He represents the 17th District in the South Carolina House of Representatives. A member of the Republican party, Burns is also part of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus. He has been actively involved in legislative committees, including the House Agriculture, Natural Resources & Environmental Affairs, and the Regulations and Administrative Procedures Committees.

Burns, a businessman from Travelers Rest, has an impressive background. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 and has created five businesses during his career. He and his wife, Anne, have four children and five grandchildren.

Notably, in 2023, Burns was one of 21 Republican co-sponsors of the South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act of 2023, a bill that would make women who had abortions eligible for the death penalty.
