Biography

Michael Murphy is an American politician and retired pilot from Kansas. He was born in Miami, Oklahoma, and graduated from the Ross School of Aviation in 1978. Murphy worked as a pilot for United Airlines from 1990 to 2007. After retiring, he operated the Prairie Oaks Inn in Sylvia, Kansas, and also wrote opinion articles and hosted a radio show called The Voice of Reason.

Murphy’s political career began when he was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives for the 114th district in November 2018. He assumed office in January 2021 and served until January 2025. During his tenure, he was known for his strong stance on various issues and his dedication to his constituents.

In 2024, Murphy was elected to the Kansas Senate, representing the 34th district. He assumed office on January 13, 2025, succeeding Mark Steffen. As a member of the Kansas Senate, Murphy has been involved in several committees, including the Government Efficiency, Education, Public Health and Welfare, and Federal and State Affairs committees. He has sponsored various bills and resolutions, focusing on property tax exemptions, term limits for legislators, and recognizing Kansas as a Purple Heart state.
