Biography

Marvin W. Lucas is a member of the Democratic Party and has been serving as a representative in the North Carolina House of Representatives since 2001. He represents District 42.

Lucas was born and raised in North Carolina. He received his B.S. from Fayetteville State University in 1964, his M.A. from North Carolina Central University in 1975, and his Ed.S. at East Carolina University in 1977. Before entering politics, Lucas had a successful career in education. He is a retired teacher and principal.

Throughout his political career, Lucas has held various positions and has been assigned to numerous committees. In the 2023-2024 session, he served on the following committees: Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee, Appropriations Committee, Appropriations on Education Committee, Education - K-12 Committee, Health Committee, Insurance Committee (as Vice Chair), Wildlife Resources Committee, and Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.

Lucas ran for re-election to the North Carolina House of Representatives to represent District 42 and won in the general election on November 8, 2022. His current term ends on January 1, 2025.

As of the 2020 Census, North Carolina state representatives represented an average of 87,116 residents. After the 2010 Census, each member represented 79,715 residents. Members of the North Carolina House of Representatives serve two-year terms and are not subject to term limits. North Carolina legislators assume office on January 1 the year after their election.
