Marian Matthews is a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, representing District 27. She assumed office on January 7, 2020, and her current term ends on December 31, 2024. She is a member of the Democratic Party and is running for re-election to the New Mexico House of Representatives to represent District 27.
Born in Springfield, Missouri, Matthews obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Missouri State University in 1967 and a Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1974. She began her career as a newspaper reporter in Springfield, Missouri, and Alamogordo, New Mexico.
Before serving in the New Mexico House of Representatives, Matthews worked as a prosecutor and deputy attorney general of New Mexico under then-Attorney General Tom Udall. She later worked as an instructor at the Central New Mexico Community College. Matthews also served as the development director of PB&J Family Services.
In the New Mexico House of Representatives, Matthews serves on the House Agriculture, Acequias, Water Resources, and Commerce and Economic Development Committees where she works to protect the environment and secure resources for local businesses. She has sponsored several bills during her tenure, demonstrating her commitment to her constituents and the issues that matter to them.
Matthews was appointed to the House by the Bernalillo County Commission on January 7, 2020, succeeding first-term legislator William “Bill” Pratt, who died in office. She is now running for re-election, with the Democratic primary scheduled for June 4, 2024.
