Biography

Lydia Hernandez is a Democratic member of the Arizona House of Representatives. She has been serving since January 2023. Prior to this, she served from 2013 to 2014.

Hernandez is known for her stance on abortion. She opposes it and in 2014, she was endorsed by Arizona Right to Life, an organization that also opposes abortion. In 2013, she signed the Center for Arizona Policy’s “Pro-Life Proclamation” where she pledged to “make every effort to secure for preborn children at every stage of development all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to persons, citizens, and residents of this State, until the decisional interpretations of the United States Constitution by the United States Supreme Court provide protection for every human being.”

In addition to her role in the House of Representatives, Hernandez served on the Financial Institutions and Government committees.

Hernandez was born in Texas and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Baylor University in 1991. Her career experience includes working as a legal assistant with Federal Immigration Counselors, an executive manager with Arizona Habitat for Humanity, the executive director of the Arizona Commission of Indian Affairs, and a project specialist and management recruitment for the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity with former Governor Jane Hull’s Administration.

She has also served on the Hispanic Caucus Board of the National School Boards Association. Currently, she is the President of the Cartwright School District governing board.

Hernandez ran for election to the Arizona House of Representatives to represent District 24 and won in the general election on November 8, 2022. She also ran for re-election for an at-large seat of the Cartwright Elementary School District in Arizona and won in the general election on November 8, 2022.
