Biography

Luis G. Fortuño became governor of Puerto Rico on December 31, 2008.

Prior to becoming governor, Fortuño was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served on the Natural Resources Committee and was Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Insular Affairs. Before coming to Congress, he was a partner at a San Juan law firm. He entered public service in 1993 after being appointed by Puerto Rico’s governor as executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and president of the Hotel Development Corporation. In 1994, he became Puerto Rico’s first secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce.

Fortuño earned a bachelor’s degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a law degree from the University of Virginia Law School. He and his wife Lucé Vela have three children.
