LOUIE BROADY NUNN was born in Park, Kentucky, on March 8, 1924. He received a B.A. from Bowling Green Business University and a LL.B. from University of Louisville. Nunn served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II. Active in civic affairs, Nunn was elected Barren County Judge/Executive in 1953 and he served as city attorney for Glasgow. He was elected Governor of Kentucky in 1967 and served from 1967 to 1971. In his first budget, Governor Nunn emphasized increases for mental health, all levels of education, and economic development. As a Republican he worked with the Democratic-controlled legislature to enact many important initiatives. The University of Louisville was made a state school and a community college became the Northern Kentucky University. As Governor he supported Kentucky educational television and the state park system. He sent the National Guard to Louisville and Lexington in response to civil rights and antiwar disturbances. Governor Nunn chaired the Republican Governors Association in 1971 and served on the National Governors’ Conference Executive Committee from 1968-69.
