Biography

Joseph M. “Joe” Bustos, a Republican, represents the 112th District in the South Carolina House of Representatives. Born on September 12, 1950, in Charleston, he is the son of Joseph and Virginia Bustos. He attended Columbia College, earning a B.A. in 1975, and later obtained a master’s degree from Central Michigan University in 1991. Joe Bustos served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1995, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. On September 18, 1971, he married Kathryn Comar, and they have two children: Kelly Ellsworth and Brian Bustos. In addition to his legislative duties, Joe Bustos has been involved in local governance, serving on the Mt. Pleasant Town Council from 2000 to 2009 and again from 2015 to 2019. His committee assignments include Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs, as well as Operations and Management (Secretary/Treasurer). He has a strong record of sponsoring bills in the House and maintaining an active voting record.
