Jerry Govan Jr. is a Democratic representative serving in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He represents District 93, having assumed office on November 11, 2024. His current term is set to end on November 9, 2026.
Born on March 17, 1958, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Jerry Govan Jr. has dedicated much of his life to public service and education. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from South Carolina State University in 1982 and pursued graduate studies at the University of South Carolina. His professional journey began with roles such as Personnel Specialist for the Department of the Navy and Recruiting Officer for the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control. Over the years, he has held various leadership positions, including Director of the Small Business Development Center at South Carolina State University and Coordinator for the 1st Judicial Circuit’s Pre-Trial Intervention Program.
Govan’s political career spans decades, with a notable tenure in the South Carolina House of Representatives representing District 95 from 1992 to 2022. During this time, he became a prominent figure in the state’s legislative processes, serving on key committees such as the Education and Public Works Committee and the Operations and Management Committee. He also held leadership roles, including Vice Chairman of the State House Committees and Chairman of the Public Safety Sub-Committee. His legislative efforts have focused on education, public safety, and community development.
In 2022, following redistricting, Govan decided to run for the position of State Secretary of Education. Although he did not advance to the general election, his commitment to education and public service remained unwavering. In 2024, he returned to the political arena, successfully running for the District 93 seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives.
Beyond his professional and political achievements, Jerry Govan Jr. is deeply rooted in his community. He is married to Wanda E. Gibson, and together they have four children and seven grandchildren. A man of faith, he serves as an Associate Minister at the Historic Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Orangeburg. His dedication to his constituents and his passion for creating meaningful change continue to define his legacy in South Carolina politics.
