Biography

Janelle Anyanonu is an esteemed member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, representing District 19. She assumed office on January 1, 2023, and her current term ends on December 31, 2024. She is a proud member of the Democratic Party and is running for re-election to continue representing District 19. Her name will be on the ballot in the Democratic primary on June 4, 2024.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Janelle Anyanonu is the daughter of a Nigerian immigrant. She graduated from Manzano High School and furthered her education at Wayland Baptist University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in applied sciences.

Before her political career, Anyanonu worked as an office manager and served as a member of the New Mexico Black Central Organizing Committee. She is a 2020 graduate of the Emerge America program in New Mexico, a program dedicated to increasing the number of Democratic women leaders from diverse backgrounds in public office through recruitment, training, and providing a powerful network.

In November 2022, Anyanonu was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives. During her first legislative session, she was among the five legislators who successfully carried the Reproductive and Gender-Affirming Health Care Freedom Act. This Act protected abortion access and access to gender-affirming care. It was signed into law on March 13, 2023.

Janelle Anyanonu’s dedication to her community and her commitment to public service are evident in her work. She continues to serve her constituents with integrity and passion, striving to make a positive impact in her district and the state of New Mexico.
