Biography

James Coleman is a member of the Democratic Party and represents District 33 in the Colorado State Senate. He assumed office on January 13, 2021, and his current term ends on January 8, 2025.

James Coleman was born in Denver, Colorado. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Oral Roberts University. His career experience includes working as the vice president of community engagement for ACE Scholarships and vice president of the board of directors at Highline Academy.

Coleman has served as a member of the Colorado Black Chamber of Commerce, INROADS, and the Urban League of Metro Denver Young Professionals. He has been assigned to various committees including the Senate Appropriations Committee, Business, Labor, and Technology Committee, and Senate State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee.

Before his tenure in the Senate, he served as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from District 7. He was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2016, becoming the youngest elected to Colorado’s state legislature. After serving 2 terms as the State Representative of House District 7, he went on to win his election to the Senate District 33 seat in November 2020.

James Coleman lives in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood. He and his wife, Shayna, have two children.
