J. Maxwell Cleland (born August 24, 1942) is a former United States senator from the state of Georgia. A member of the Democratic Party, he served one term in the U.S. Senate, representing Georgia from January 7, 1997, to January 3, 2003. During this period, he held the office of senator as a historical member of Congress, identified in congressional records by the bioguide ID C001034.
