HORACE WHITE, the fortieth governor of New York was born in Buffalo, New York on October 7, 1865. His education was attained at Cornell University, where he graduated in 1887, and then at Columbia University, where he earned a law degree in 1889. After establishing his legal career, White entered into politics. He served as a member of the New York State Senate from 1896 to 1908; and was the lieutenant governor of New York from 1909 to 1910. On October 6, 1910 Governor Charles E. Hughes resigned from office, and White, who was the lieutenant governor at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. He served in this capacity until January 1, 1911 when Governor-elect John A. Dix took office. Afterwards, White retired from public service. He continued to stay active in his Syracuse legal practice, as well as becoming involved in the publishing of the Syracuse Post-Standard . Governor Horace White passed away on November 28, 1943, and was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, New York.
