Biography

Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, HENRY HOWARD studied law and practiced for several years before joining Harris Manufacturing while in his early thirties. He served in the Rhode Island General Assembly for one year and was a delegate to three Republican National Conventions. During Howard’s two terms as governor, agricultural and industrial interests grew and legislation was enacted governing railroad and highway construction. After two terms in office, Howard did not seek reelection, instead returning to his business interests. He was named an assistant commissioner to the Paris Exposition, was director of the National Bank of North America, and served as president and director of a number of corporations, including the firm where he had begun his business career: Harris Manufacturing.
