Biography

Gilbert Nelson Haugen (born April 21, 1859) was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Iowa. He represented Iowa’s 4th Congressional District and served as a Representative from December 4, 1899, to March 3, 1933. Over the course of his long tenure, he completed 17 terms in Congress, marking him as a durable and influential figure in his district’s political life during the early twentieth century.

Serving continuously for more than three decades, Haugen was part of the Republican Party’s congressional delegation through periods of significant national change, including the turn of the century and the years leading up to and following World War I. As a historical member of Congress from Iowa, his career in the House spanned from the 56th Congress through the early 72nd Congress, concluding his service in 1933.
