EZRA P. SAVAGE, the thirteenth governor of Nebraska, was born in Connorsville, Indiana, on April 3, 1842. His education was attained at Davenport High School in Iowa and at Iowa College. He later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1875. After moving to Custer County, Nebraska, he worked in the stock commission business. Savage first entered politics as mayor of South Omaha, a position he held in 1877. He also was elected to the Nebraska House of Representatives in 1883, served as city councilman of South Omaha in 1888, and served as lieutenant governor of Nebraska from 1900 to 1901. On May 1, 1901, Governor Charles H. Dietrich resigned from office, and Savage, who was the lieutenant governor at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. During his tenure, the pardoning of former State Treasurer Bartley caused a political controversy that resulted in Governor Savage to withdraw from the 1902 gubernatorial race. After leaving office on January 8, 1903, Savage retired from public service. He later moved to Tacoma, Washington, where he worked in the lumber industry. Governor Ezra P. Savage passed away on January 8, 1920, and was buried in the Tacoma Cemetery in Tacoma, Washington.
