Biography

EDWARD HERSCHLER was born in Lincoln County, Wyoming, in 1918. He served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1949, he received a law degree from the University of Wyoming Law School. Prior to serving in the Wyoming State House of Representatives from 1959-69, he became the Kemmerer Town attorney and Lincoln County prosecutor. He served as president of the Wyoming Bar Association and as executive secretary of the State Democratic Central Committee. He was elected governor in 1974 and reelected to two more terms. During his tenure, Herschler chaired the Western Governors’ Conference, the Western Governors’ Policy Office, and the Interstate Oil Compact Commission. After leaving public office, he continued to practice private law in Cheyenne. He died on Febraury 5, 1990.
