Courtney Sappington is a Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives, representing District 5. Sappington was chosen in 2025 by Republican precinct committee members to fill the vacancy left when Representative Carrie Barth resigned on September 25, 2025, after moving out of the district; Sappington was the only candidate and was selected by acclamation. The district is based in Douglas County. In August 2026, Sappington won the Republican nomination for a full term in a three-way primary and faces Democrat Henry Johns in the November 2026 general election.1
Sappington lives in Douglas County and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Truman State University. Sappington’s private-sector career has included work in logistics, bookkeeping and sales analysis.
In the House, Sappington serves on the committees on Child Welfare and Foster Care, Judiciary, Local Government, and Welfare Reform. Sappington has supported legislation capping increases in property tax revenue and has said that Kansas should not offer special tax incentives to data centers, particularly large hyperscale projects.
