Biography

Carmen Theresa Morales, an American Democratic Party politician, currently serves as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly for the 34th legislative district. She assumed office on January 9, 2024.

Background and Education

Morales is a resident of Belleville, New Jersey. She earned her undergraduate degree at Montclair State University, followed by a master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Additionally, she completed all but her dissertation toward a doctorate at Seton Hall University.

Professional Career

Morales works as the director of curriculum and instruction at the Essex County Schools of Technology. She has also served as a trustee of Essex County College from 2017 to 2023.

Elective Office

In the wake of the 2021 apportionment, the Essex County Democratic Organization selected Morales to run for one of the two Assembly seats in the 34th district. Alongside fellow newcomer Michael Venezia, she defeated Republicans Clenard H. Childress Jr. and James McGuire in the 2023 New Jersey General Assembly election. Notably, Morales was one of 27 members elected for the first time in 2023 to serve in the General Assembly.

  • Republican Clenard H. Childress Jr.: 5,241 votes (11.1%)
