ARTHUR GRISWOLD CRANE, born in Davenport Center, New York, received a bachelor of science degree from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Columbia University. He served as both Superintendent of Schools and president of the State Normal School in Minot, North Dakota. During World War I, he served as a Major in the Army Sanitary Corps and authored a volume of The Official Medical History of the War dealing with the rehabilitation and vocational education of servicemen. In 1922, he was named president of the University of Wyoming, a position that he held until 1941. In 1939, he became president of the National Association of State Universities. In 1946 he was elected Secretary of State, and took over as Acting Governor after the resignation of Lester Hunt. During his brief tenure, Crane supported construction of the Wyoming Home and Hospital for the Aged. After completing his term as Acting Governor, he retired from public service.
