ABRAHAM KURKINDOLLE ALLISON, Florida’s sixth governor, was born in Jones County, Georgia, on December 10, 1810. After settling in Apalachicola, Florida, Allison entered into a career in politics. He served on the bench of the Franklin County Court, was clerk of the U.S. Court, and was a member of the Territorial Legislature, serving as speaker of the house and president of the senate. His political career was interrupted by the Civil War, and he enlisted in the Confederate army. He participated in battles at Macon, Georgia; and Natural Bridge, Florida. After his military duty, he returned to his politics. On April 1, 1865, Governor John Milton committed suicide, and Allison, who was president of the senate at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. He served in this capacity until May 19, 1865. After leaving office, Allison was arrested on June 19, 1865, by federal authorities. He was incarcerated with other Confederate officials at Fort Pulaski, Georgia, for six months. Governor Abraham K. Allison died at his home in Quincy, on July 8, 1893.
