About RepBio
Mission, mandate, and governance standards for the Representative Biography Office.
RepBio.org is a directory of the people who represent you: every current U.S. senator, representative and governor, the President and Cabinet, and the members of all 50 state legislatures, together with historical members of Congress. Each profile carries office contact details, party, district, term dates and a biography, and House members link to their recorded roll-call votes. The registry is guided by a commitment to transparency, traceable sourcing and nonpartisan presentation.
Start with the U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Governors and White House directories, or open your state to see everyone who represents it.
Mandate
- Maintain an accurate record for every representative, senator, governor, Cabinet-level appointee and state legislator.
- Mark officials as former as soon as they leave office, and add new members when they are sworn in.
- Offer tools for researchers, journalists and civic technologists to reuse the data, including the open JSON roster of current members of Congress at /api/webmcp/legislators.json.
Governance
Rosters are refreshed from official sources: the congressional directory maintained by the unitedstates project for the Senate and House, the OpenStates people dataset for governors and state legislatures, and whitehouse.gov for the administration. House roll-call votes come from the Clerk of the House through the Congress.gov API.
This project is stewarded by an independent editorial board and supported by civic technologists. Rosters are checked against these sources on the first of every month: members who leave office are marked former and new members are added. Each profile lists its sources in a numbered References section.
